Information for Band Directors

Thank you so much for having your students perform with The United States Air Force Academy Band!  Hopefully, these instructions will assist you in preparing your students for the performance.  At about one hour before the performance, please have the students assembled near the stage so I can brief them on specifics of their involvement in the concert.  I will discuss when and how to enter and exit the stage, as well as where to sit.  I will also review the two pieces in detail, so the students are comfortable with the musical and logistical procedures.

Stars and Stripes
All repeats are good, but certain parts have been cut:

  1. Brass (excluding French horns) play 2nd time only at second strain.
  2. Euphonium solo (only our player will play) on melody at trio – clarinets may play melody down an octave.
  3. Brass play 2nd time only at Grandioso (our piccolos will stand out front both times) - kids stay seated.
  4. Our trumpets and trombones will walk out front for 2nd time through break strain - kids stay seated.
  5. All personnel (including kids) stand in place for last 32 bars of piece.

Stars and Stripes will be performed near the beginning of the second half of the concert.   Please ensure your students (and their families) get tickets from your local newspaper if they wish to attend the rest of the concert.  These concerts tend to sell out, and it is possible that there may not be seats available if they do not have tickets.   Please feel free to call if you have any questions.  I tend to travel a lot, but I will get back to you as soon as I can.  Thank you.

St Louis Blues
Our Trumpets and trombones will be standing out front at this point.  There will not be much delay (after finishing stars and Stripes) before we start this tune.

  1. Add 4-bar Snare drum solo to start the tune.
  2. After snare solo, start at the beginning of written piece Trumpets come in at letter A and play 8 bars as written.
  3. Then instead of a 1-bar drum break, we will take 8 bars for bones and trumpets to return to their seats.
  4. When everyone has returned to seats, trumpets come in at letter B and the band goes on.
  5. Cut from letter F to I and play to end of the piece.

Stars and Stripes and St Louis Blues will be performed near the beginning of the second half of the concert.

Please ensure your students (and their families) get tickets from the local newspaper if they wish to attend the rest of the concert.  These concerts sell out, and it is possible that their may not be seats available if they do not have tickets. Please feel free to call if you have any questions.  Thank you.
